Offices buy floor area, and floor area is where the cost of a joint multiplies. A 3200 × 1600 format takes joints out of the setting-out drawing, which takes decisions away from the person kneeling on the floor at seven in the morning. On a large floor plate the joint pattern is the architecture, and it is worth setting out once against the column grid and then repeating it for every floor. The second workplace question is traffic: a flat colour shows every drag mark from a delivery trolley, which is why the floor finishes specified for offices carry a fine mineral break-up rather than a perfectly even tone.
What each sector actually asks for
The technical questions change more between sectors than they do between finishes. A hotel asks about cleaning cycles, a clinic asks about disinfectants, and an office asks about the joint pattern.
