Sintered stone or quartz: how to choose for a worktop

Two materials, one application, and a decision that comes down to three properties rather than a preference.

We make both, so this is not going to end with one being better. For a kitchen worktop the choice comes down to three properties, and which of them matters depends entirely on how the kitchen gets used.

Heat

Sintered stone is fired; there is no resin in the body. A pan taken straight off an induction hob and put down on it does not damage it. Engineered quartz contains polymer resin, and sustained direct heat will eventually discolour it. If the household is one where a trivet is a theoretical object, this decides it.

Ultraviolet light

Quartz is an interior material. In a kitchen with a large south-facing window, or in an outdoor kitchen, resin-bound surfaces can shift colour over years of direct sun. Sintered stone does not, which is why it is the one specified for external work and for anything that runs from inside to outside across a threshold.

Impact

This is the one that goes the other way. Quartz is slightly more forgiving of a hard knock on a corner or an arris. Sintered stone is harder and, at the edge, marginally more brittle. Neither survives a dropped cast-iron pan on a 90 degree arris, but a small radius on the edge detail helps more than the choice of material does.

What is not on this list

Staining. Both are non-porous and neither needs sealing. Any comparison that leads with stain resistance is comparing both of them against granite, which is a different conversation.

If the kitchen has a hob, a window and a family, specify sintered. If it has none of those and the client prefers the quartz colour range, specify quartz. That is genuinely the whole decision.
