What this finish is for
A near-black ground with a sharp white vein. Book-matched across two slabs it produces a symmetrical figure roughly 3200 mm wide, which is why it turns up behind bars and in hotel bathrooms more often than in kitchens.
Polished black shows everything: dust, fingerprints, water spots and the direction you last wiped it. That is true of every polished dark surface and it is worth saying plainly before someone specifies it for a family kitchen. If the room needs dark and quiet rather than dark and reflective, M09 is the finish to look at.
Through-body colour means a chipped arris on a mitred edge shows black, not white. On a dark surface that difference is the difference between a repair and a replacement.

A 3200 × 1600 slab is not a big tile
Two people and a frame move it; a suction rail does the rest. The reason the format matters is not the size of the slab, it is the number of joints that disappear from the drawing.
A three-metre island in 3200 comes out of one slab, with the waterfall ends book-matched from the same piece. In 1200 × 600 it is nine pieces and eight joints, and every one of those joints is a decision somebody has to make on site, at seven in the morning, with the client arriving at nine.
